What can you use heat-shrink tubing for?

Shrink tubing can be used for various applications. Primarily, heatshrink tubing is used in electronics for insulating cables to protect them from water. But it is also ideal for colour coding cables, hoses, ropes, connectors and other applications. Putting heat shrink tubing over this and then heating it with a hot air gun shrinks it tightly around the application. This protects it from water, among other things. It remains flexible after shrinking and is then firmly attached, making it the ideal insulation material.

How to use heatshrink tubing?

Shrink tubing, as the name suggests, shrinks when heated around the cable, hose, rope or other application. This happens at a heat between 70°C and 100°C degrees Celsius. To shrink heat shrink tubing, it is best to use a heat source such as a hot air gun / paint dryer, lighter or gas burner.

Shrink tubing with or without adhesive?

There are two types of heatshrink tubing, i.e. with adhesive and without. If you choose shrink tubing with adhesive, the adhesive will melt when heated and mix between the tubing and substrate. This will create an extra strong connection, making the cable, hose or other application even better insulated. With shrink tubing, only the tubing will shrink around the application. It too will bind tightly around it.

How does shrink ratio work?

By shrink ratio we mean the ratio of how the heatshrink tubing is before it has shrunk. And how it is after it has been heated and shrunk. Here we have two shrink ratios, namely 2 to 1 abbreviated 2:1 and 3 to 1 abbreviated 3:1. So the shrink tubing shrinks to half of its original diameter dimension at 2:1 and to one-third of its diameter dimension at 3:1.

What size of heatshrink tubing should I use?

The diameter of the heatshrink tubing before and after shrinking is specified. When selecting the heatshrink tubing, make sure that the smallest diameter of the heatshrink tubing is slightly smaller than the cable diameter. This ensures that the heat shrink tubing will shrink well around the cable after heating.
