How to choose the right cable ties?
Tyraps, also known as tie-wraps or cable ties, are a handy tool that can come in handy in many situations. They are indispensable in different fields and for a variety of applications. Cable ties come in different sizes, colours and strengths, and can be used for bundling power cables, supporting plants, temporary repairs and much more.
Different sizes, colours and strengths
At Tape-Deal.com, cable ties are available in lengths ranging from 100 mm to 1220 mm, in colours from black to pink, and in widths from 2.5 mm to 12 mm. Most cable ties are made of nylon, a material known for its durability and flexibility. For heavier applications, stainless steel (SS) cable ties are also available. These are not only stronger, but also offer greater chemical resistance and are non-flammable.
Nylon
The standard cable tie is made of pure Polyamide 6.6 Nylon, a high-quality synthetic material. This makes the cable ties safe and durable in use, even at temperatures ranging from -40 degrees Celsius to 85 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the thermal stability of this material, the cable ties are highly resistant to temperature fluctuations. However, it is important to note that deformation can occur if the temperature falls outside these limits, which can reduce the performance of the cable ties.
Tensile strength
Another important property of cable ties is tensile strength. This indicates how much tension can be applied to the cable tie for a long period of time without it breaking. For example, a cable tie 2.5 millimetres wide has a tensile strength of 8.2 kilograms. In general, the wider the cable tie is, the greater the tensile strength. This means that wider cable ties can withstand more weight and tension without breaking, making them suitable for heavier applications.
Cable tie width | Tensile strength |
2.5 mm | 8.2 kg |
3.6 mm | 18 kg |
4.8 mm | 50 kg |
7.6 mm | 54.4 kg |
9.0 mm | 79.4 kg |
*applies only to standard cable ties
Durability and efficiency
Although you can use a longer cable tie and cut off the excess section, in terms of durability, it is advisable to waste as little as possible. This means determining the right length in advance. The length of the cable tie depends on the circumference of the bundle you want to tie together.
The formula for the right length
There is a simple formula you can use to calculate the correct length of your cable tie:
Diameter x Pi (3.14) = circumference
Using this formula, you can calculate the circumference of your bundle by multiplying the diameter by Pi (3.14). Here is an example to make it clear:
Suppose the diameter of your cable bundle is 5 centimetres. Then you calculate the circumference as follows:
5 cm x 3.14 = 15.7 cm
In this case, you need a cable tie of at least 160 millimetres.
Summary
Choosing the right cable tie depends on the specific application and the size of the cable bundle. By choosing the right length and strength, you can work more efficiently and avoid waste. Remember to use the formula to determine the right length and choose the material that best suits your needs. With these tips, you can always find the right cable tie for any job.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE TD47 PRODUCTS CABLE TIES?
TD47 Products Standard Cable Ties are made of the material polyamide (PA 66),
a plastic which is mainly processed in injection moulding processes.
Polyamide is a hygroscopic material. This means that polyamide not only absorbs moisture but can also release it. For optimal application of polyamide cable ties, it is important that they have a moisture content of at least 2.5%, giving the cable ties the most optimal properties.
The packaging in which TD47 products cable ties are supplied ensures that the moisture content in the material remains at the correct level for as long as possible. It is therefore important to keep/storage the polyamide cable ties in the sealed packaging supplied to ensure the quality of the cable ties remains as long as possible.
OUR TIPS FOR STORING CABLE TIES:
- Store cable ties in the packaging provided, we recommend using up opened packages within one year.
- Do not store cable ties in sunlight. As you sometimes see them in vans on the dashboard, this does not help the quality.
- Do not store cable ties near heat sources, such as a radiator or hot air heater.
- Optimal storage conditions are around 23°C, humidity around 50% and preferably in a cupboard or case out of direct sunlight.
