All Leatherman products are made of 100% high-quality stainless steel (exception: the screw bits for the tool adapter are made of tool steel). Stainless steel is not rustproof; it is corrosion resistant. Depending on the mix of metal alloys, stainless steel can be highly corrosion-resistant and relatively soft (like kitchen cutlery), or it can be somewhat corrosion-resistant and quite hard. Our products are made of the latter kind of stainless steel, which means the components of your tool are strong and the blades maintain a sharp cutting edge.
Depending on what your Leatherman is exposed to, there are different cleaning methods you can consider.
- You can clean it with a low-viscosity oil (e.g. WD-40, Liquid Wrench, CRC 3-36), which helps remove moisture trapped in the hinges.
- Polish stained surfaces with a polishing cloth or non-metallic abrasive (e.g. Scotchbrite sponge or soft brush).
- Use a PTFE/Teflon lubricant on turning or wear areas to keep your tool working as smoothly as possible.
- If dirt or sticky substances have accumulated between the blades, your Leatherman can also be cleaned in a mild solution of detergent and water.
- To remove tar and similar substances, clean your Leatherman with white spirit or another similar liquid. Warning: acetone or brake cleaner can corrode plastic parts.
- If the product is not properly maintained, corrosion may occur. Your Leatherman product should be cleaned, dried and lubricated regularly to prevent rust and corrosion. This is especially true if your Leatherman has been exposed to salt water or marine environments. If this is the case, rinse your Leatherman in fresh water, dry it and lubricate it with a light oil.
Leatherman knives can be straight, serrated, or both. Sharpening methods depend on the type of knife in your Leatherman product. (Note that serrated knives should not be sharpened in the same way as straight knives.)
- Straight knives can be sharpened using any standard tool, including sharpening stones, sharpening steels and various kits.
- The standard sharpening angle for straight knives is 32° (16° per side). Serrated blades are sharpened at 20° (one side).
- Serrated blades require a sharpening system specially designed for serrated edges to preserve the curves of the serrations. Sharpen serrated blades on the cutting edge only. Sharpening the flat (back) side of the blade will wear away the serrations, reducing the effectiveness of the blade.
The Tread consists of three main parts, all of which are a type of stainless steel alloy:
- Screw: SS410
- Connector: SS420
- Link: SS17-4
Stainless steel is exactly what the word says: steel that does not rust. It does contain iron (Fe) and can therefore oxidise in certain environments. The human body is a very salt-rich environment that accelerates corrosion. Stainless steel alloys vary based on their intended use, with some oxidising less than others. Leatherman chose the above alloys based on a compromise between process limitations and performance.
To keep your wearable looking nice, you should remove the salt daily, possibly with a toothbrush to reach all the little spots. However, if that is not enough to slow down corrosion, you may need to use a preventive coating such as oil. You may have to experiment with different oils to find one that is allowed to come into contact with your skin. You may need to seek advice from a dermatologist.
